For example, the home or front page address of this blog is The home page of a website is like the main front door of a house/estate that leads to various rooms or apartment.

Top level domain and second level domain explained

Top level and second level domain

When you register a single domain name, you register both second level domain (SLD) and top-level domain (TLD). The TLD is commonly known as domain extension.

What domain name should I choose for my blog?

This is a common question asked, probably because of its importance. Can you imagine how important location is if you want to secure a land for your residential or commercial building. The analogy is suitable for selecting a domain name. Domain name can help or mar your online business. Poorly selected bad domain name can

  • keep monetary potential of your website low.

That is why selecting a good domain name is an important aspect of your blogging and blog marketing plans. I’ve written a comprehensive article on choosing best domain name for business website. Let me repeat this before I move on. Invest time and effort to select a perfect suitable domain name for your blog. Blog that makes money require a good domain name. Such time and effort are worth its overall marketing benefits. Now that you’ve selected a good domain name for the blog, the next thing is to move headway to registering the name.

How to register the domain name?

You are required to pay annual licensing fee to register a domain name. This money is payable to your domain registering company. When you register the name, you acquire the ownership of the second level domain for the period you paid for. You should register your domain name with a reputable domain name registering company accredited by ICANN. ICANN is an agent that oversees the registration of domain name.

The question may arise thus:

Which registrar should I use for my blog domain name?

To come up with a good domain registrar, below are some factors that you can check out:

  • ICANN accreditation
  • Price
  • User-friendly domain control dashboard
  • Level of technical support provided  by the registrar

Now that you’ve registered a good domain with a reputable domain name registrar, the next thing is to get a hosting account.

What Exactly Web Hosting Provider is?

Web hosting providers give you space online to accommodate your website contents so that your files and data are accessible by internet users. You’ll be required to pay a monthly rental fee which covers the cost of using a disk space and bandwidth. Just as you store your data on the local hard disk of your computer, web hosts disk space is used to store your website contents which includes texts, images and videos in the cyber space. One thing that burdens an internet newbie is:

Where should I host my blog?

There are numbers of web hosting providers you can consider to host your blog. You need to select the one appropriate for your blog. This depends on: How much contents your blog will accommodate? What amount of traffic you expect? These among others are the questions to considered before deciding  a web host or hosting plan for your blog. A blog that makes money requires huge targeted traffic. Isn’t it? It is very important to select a good hosting company that offer value to meet your blog growth without additional unexpected cost. You might consider a host that:

  • Offer reliable service
  • Has user-friendly dashboard
  • Offer quality and prompt support
  • Offer required email related service
  • Sufficient bandwidth and disk space

Can I host my blog on a free web host server?

Yes, you can get a free hosting service but it is not meant for a blog that makes money. The cons of free web host over worth few dollars you can spend on a paid hosting service. After all, you pay for the service unknowingly.

  • With free web host, you don’t have control over the management of your blog
  • Monetization is very difficult for free-hosted blog. Then, what is the essence of such blog?
  • Free-host companies put irritating ads on your website in form of banner, pop-up advertisement etc.
  • Free web hosts make you look not only unprofessional but also highly unserious.

If it is a must to host your blog with a free web host provider, which I don’t recommend, the only fair option is the Google hosting at blogspot. Once you get the hosting provider you are satisfied with, the next thing is to register with the provider for a suitable hosting plan. Various plans are often available. They vary in price and features. So far

  • You’ve registered a carefully selected domain name with reputable domain name registrar.
  • You’ve subscribed for web hosting service, choosing a suitable hosting plan with a good hosting company.

The next is to connect your domain name registrar and the web host together (create communicating channel between them).

How to Connect the Domain Name with Your Host?

This step is necessary if your domain name registrar is different from the host. This is most likely the case because we want best deals and value in everything we do. The best host isn’t necessarily the best domain registrar. Now that your domain registrar is different from your web hosting provider, you connect the domain with the host by changing the domain name server (DNS) from your domain name dashboard.

  1. Login to your web host control panel, locate the DNS setting and see the name server of your web host. If you’ve any problem, contact your web host and ask which nameserver to use.
  2. Login to your domain registrar dashboard. If you’ve more than one domain in your portfolio, click on the domain name you want to manage. Click DNS and change it to your host name server.

Nameserver looks something like this:

The first being primary name server and the second is secondary nameserver. Now all is done. You don’t have much to do with your domain registrar regarding your blog. Buck of the work remain with your web host. I’m not saying you should throw away the login detail to your domain dashboard anyway! The next thing is to set up your blog and load it with quality content.

Setting up Your Blog

Setting up a blog that makes money is task that requires consistent effort, learning skill, quality content and targeted traffic. Things become much easier if you see a coach who can help you overcome the learning curve faster. Lots of content management systems (CMS) are available to set up your blog without having to write a single line of codes (HTML, CSS, PHP etc) but my recommendation is WordPress. I love WordPress.

What is WordPress

WordPress is a content management software that helps build website and blog with clicks of mouse. No programming skill is required. If you can use word processing software package, you are already an expert in using WordPress. Sounds far from the truth. Believe me, it’s easier than you think. WordPress makes things easy. You simply add contents in form of articles, blog entries, news including texts, images, animation and videos.

One exciting thing about WordPress is the inclusion of themes and plugins features. You can change the entire look of your blog by changing or customizing the theme. Plugins enhance the functionality of your blog. Whatever task you want in your blog, just search for the appropriate plugin in the WordPress plugin repository. While you can use only one theme at a time, several plugin can be installed on your WordPress blog as desired to improve its functionality and users experience.

I probably forget to tell you the most exciting thing about WordPress. It is an open source program. Yes, it is free and as such you don’t pay even a dime to use it.

How to install WordPress?

It is easy to install WordPress for your blog. These days, most web hosting providers make blog building extremely simple with one click WordPress installation. The blog post on easy WordPress installation explains how to use softaculous to install the software through your web host CPanel.

    • Simply login to your web host control panel.
    • Scroll down to ‘Software and service’ and click on softaculous.
    • Click on WordPress. Then, fill in the form with required fields and click install.
    • When the installation completes, you receive a congratulatory message.

Now your blog is ready and functional.

Spice your blog with WordPress theme

Employ the functionality of WordPress to spice up your blog theme. Your newly published WordPress site has default theme which probably not provides a nice attractive look and aesthetic layout you desire. The feel and touch of a blog intended for making money need to be given attention. It is therefore important to make your blog appears good by installing a good looking, easily customisable theme.

Thousands of themes are available for free. You can, as well, consider a premium theme for better value. Some of these premium theme cost less than $100. However, care should be taken when selecting premium themes. Some low standard premium themes are not as valuable as some free themes if fully customised.

        1. Super helpful post!

Create value to become valuable. I am big on knowing the tech side but going overboard in the value added side of things. I post 5 times daily or more to over deliver.

Love the tech tips here. Pick a proper domain name for your brand. Mine is a bit long but it is true to my karmic brand, which works for me.

I left this comment on, the content curation website and blogging community.

        2. Awesome, this is more than blogging 101! It sure has lots of impressive details on setting up a blog. The steps were painstakingly described, and there is no doubt that new and old bloggers would find it helpful!

I found this post in – the content syndication and social bookmarking website for Internet marketers. Hence, I also left the above comment.

          Sunday – contributor

        3. Wow! A lot of great information here. You really broke it down on how to start a blog that will make money. Thanks for sharing this with us!

        4. Not the usual blog topic about domain names and picking a host that will fit your needs and purpose.

Your domain name should be easily remembered and not complicated while the TLD that is commonly known as domain extension should be known since there are several TLD’s like .org .com .edu and yours must be correct .edu is for education/schools and etc.

I found this post shared on, the Internet marketing social bookmarking and networking site, and I “kingged” it and left this comment.

        5. These tips should set one who wants to create a blog on the way, the clarity is out of this world, like sunday said it is “more than blogging 101”.. Lol

However making money from a blog has to do with value after setting up a blog, do you intend to create value with, that should be the first purpose as that is what will bring in the money

Sadly alot of people create blogs with the intention making quick money, when they don’t get the money they get burnt out and abandon it thereby making the whole blog creating effort worthless… Thanks for sharing on
